I’ve always wondered what it would be like to wash my clothes, and put it on… straight from a washing machine.

If you live a busy life, you probably have thought the same.

Truth is, this is not just a fantasy. Washing machines today can actually wash your clothes, and dry them too.

So, can washing machines dry clothes?

Although all washers can dry clothes to some extent.

In this articles, we’ll discuss:

  • What washers can completely dry clothes too.
  • Other options available to you,

Let’s dive in.

WHAT WASHING MACHINE CAN ALSO DRY CLOTHES

CAN WASHING MACHINE DRY CLOTHES

The short answer is:

Washer dryers.

They are also called washer dryer combo.

WASHER DRYER COMBO

These washing machine can both wash your clothes and dry them in one go. And I mean, dry them enough to put them on straight, or to fold them in a bag.

These types of washing machines are the answer to the question: can washing machines dry clothes?

Unlike normal washers that end at the spinning phase, washer dryers have a built-in drying feature.

You will need to manually select different drying settings to determine how dry you want your clothes to be.

In Bosch washer dryers, they only have two dryer settings:

  • Gentle
  • Intensive

This is not the case in all washer products though.

Some dryers have

  • Automatic Dry
  • Regular/Heavy
  • Delicates
  • Permanent Press

Samsung washer dryers have

  • Cotton Dry
  • Synthetics Dry.

You’ll have to check your particular product to see the available dryer setting.

Alright, let’s leave washer dryer settings for a different article.

Instead, we’ll focus on the effectiveness and other factors to consider.

WASHER DRYER COMBO EFFECTIVENESS

CAN WASHING MACHINE DRY CLOTHES

How effective are washer dryers?

If asked this question in the context of whether they get the job done, the answer is a yes.

Yes they are effective.

But based on other merits, such as when compared with stand alone dryers. The answer is it is less effective when compared to dryers.

So as not to get us confused, I’ll suggest we first understand the pros and cons.

This will prevent you from having an exaggerated expectation if you choose to go for it.

Washing machines that can dry your clothes have their different drawbacks, that you will need to put into consideration, before cashing out on them.

ADVANTAGES OF WASHER DRYERS

CAN WASHING MACHINE DRY CLOTHES

WASH AND DRY SIMULTANEOUSLY

You don’t need to worry about drying your clothes. This is good for those with busy schedules.

Nursing mothers, for example, can start the washing process and go care for her baby and other house chores.

The next time she comes to the machine, it will be to fold her already dried clothes. Isn’t this wonderful!

Busy workers can wash clothes at the end of a hectic work day. They don’t have to wait an hour to dry their clothes again.

You simply wash your clothes and go take a rest… or even sleep. You can return following morning to iron your clothes and wear. Or simply throw them on, if ironing is not your calling.

CONVENIENCE

Washer dryers speak convenience. While hand wash is more tedious, machine wash too has its own stress. Especially if you have to wash at the end of a busy, stressful day.

Washer dryers take this added stress out of the picture.

Maybe there are other advantages. But aside from these two advantages, the rest are advertiser’s marketing strategy.

Now, let’s face reality: the disadvantages.

DISADVANTAGES OF WASHER DRYER

Prolonged operation time

I would have wished to say that washer dryers are the holy grail of washing machines, but sadly this is not the case.

Drying your clothes directly from the washing can be time consuming.

The washing machine prolongs the spinning stage to get as much water as possible out. This delayed spinning stage is a major downside of this type of washer when compared to the standalone washing machine.

Some washer dryers take up to 7 hours to wash and dry clothes from start to finish.

This is more than 3 times the amount of time it takes to wash and dry your clothes in separate washing machines and dryers.

So, in terms of time management, it is not the best option available to you.

Increased electricity bill

You might think that washing and drying your clothes in one wash will save you extra electricity expenses. But in truth, the opposite is what happens.

With a prolonged operation time, you’ll have more count on your electricity meter.

A stand alone washer takes 56 minutes (plus or minus 10 minutes on different washing machines) to wash cotton fabrics.

An average dryer can dry even denim fabrics in 50 minutes. I often set my dryer to 45 minutes when drying my denim shorts.

In total we’ll spend somewhere around 2 hours to wash and dry clothes with a separate washing machine and dryer.

Compare this with the 7 hours started above and you’ll realize that the extra hours spent and the resulting extra electricity cost is worth considering before throwing some cash into this type of washing machine.

We might not be far from the truth if we estimate that washer dryers take 2 to3 times the electricity bill used on stand alone washers and dryers.

Threats to fabrics

Prolonged drying creates a gradual wear and tear on your fabrics.

Washing machines automates the washing process and increases convenience. However, in terms of fabric care it comes second to hand wash.

Combine an extended washing time with a prolonged drying time and your fabric undergoes a slow death.

If you’ve ever put on a nice eye catchy dress only for an arm or armpit to tear in public, you’ll understand the threats prolonge drying time can have on your fabric.

OTHER AVAILABLE OPTIONS TO WASH AND DRY SIMULTENEOUSLY

CAN WASHING MACHINE DRY CLOTHES
Spread clothes on the lines
  • High spin washer setting
  • Washer and AC combination
  • Washer and natural air combination
  • Washer and ironing combination

HIGH SPIN WASH SETTING

A high spin cycle can reduce the amount of water in the clothes during spin setting.

this reduces the amount of water to a bare minimum,

WASHER AND AC COMBINATION

Have you noticed you tend to be tasty when you’re under an AC.  This is because air conditions absorb moisture from the atmosphere.

You can use this to your advantage.

Simply spread your clothes in open areas in reach of the AC.

WASHER AND AIR COMBINATION

You can wash your clothes in a washer and dry the cloths on the lines.

This is the oldest dryer before dryers were manufactured.

So if you don’t wish to dry your clothes in a dryer. You can simply expose them to air to dry.

WASHER AND IRONING COMBINATION

A fourth option is to iron your clothes after a good spin cycle. If you combine this with exposing the dress to air, you should have a dried dress. Dried enough to be worn or hung in a wardrobe.

CONCLUSION

CAN WASHING MACHINE DRY CLOTHES

Washer dryers can dry your clothes in one wash.

Other machines can drastically reduce the water in your washed fabric.

But if you want to get your clothes washed and dried effectively, you should employ a dryer, or spread your clothes on the lines to dry.
